
The Spinal Cord Injuries Association of Nigeria (SCIAN) is a non-profit, voluntary, non-political, non-sectarian, organisation founded in 1984 by a group of spinal cord injured patients at the National Orthopaedic Hospital Igbobi Lagos. It was registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission in 1993 (RC 7388)
Our Aims
Aim 1
To promote the rehabilitation, self-development and general welfare of spinal cord injured persons.
Aim 2
To provide common forum for members, their families, and caregivers to meet and share experiences and problems and to proffer solutions.
Aim 3
To eradicate the discriminative attitude of the general public against persons with disabilities, especially those on the wheelchair.
Our Objectives
Objective 1
To provide a comprehensive rehabilitation centre for members, with a Secretariat and facilities for learning and relearning, with a view to reintegrating members to the larger society and to thus contribute their quota to the socio-economic development of the country.
Objective 2
To enlighten and educate the general public on the rights of persons with disabilities to participate in all areas of human endeavour on an equal basis with other members of the society.
Objective 3
To create avenues for fund raising activities to finance and maintain the association by means of donations, funds and acquisition of financial revenues.
Objective 4
To promote ordinances, regulations and laws for the benefit of Persons with disability at local, state and federal government levels.
Objective 5
To work with other organizations of persons with disability for the actualization of the aims and objectives of the Association.

Objective 6
- Housing – To allocate suitable accommodation for wheelchair users.
- Medical Aids – To make available, appropriate assistive devices, medical aids and equipment for physical improvement.
- Employment – To promote and explore avenues for economic empowerment to contribute effectively to the national economy.
- Transportation – To facilitate the availability of suitable transportation systems for wheelchair users in particular, and other disabled commuters.
- Accessibility – To promote and ensure accessibility into public places.
- Education – To have access to qualitative education by providing disability-friendly infrastructure in schools from the primary to the tertiary level.
